After Gettysburg

Staggering losses were suffered at Gettysburg: 28,063 Confederates and 24,049 Union troops.

Lee returned to Virginia with a delayed pursuit by Meade. Over the course of the summer, Lee moved south and crossed the Rapidan River in September. Meade crossed the nearby Rappahannock River and occupied Culpeper.
